Switzerland lies in the middle of Central Europe and borders in the west to France, in the North to Germany, in the East to Austria and to the principality of Lichtenstein, and borders in the South to Italy. The capital city is Bern. The Swiss Confederation is divided into three major areas:

The Swiss Alpes, the hilly Midlands that streches from Bodensee to the lake of Geneva, and the Swiss Jura. Switzerland bears and shares the highest mountains in Europe. Despite the high amount of mountain area in their country more than half of their area is shaped by meadows and grazing. The highest mountains are the Dufourspitze in the massif of Monte-Rosa with a hight of 4634 meter next to the Italian boarder, the Dom with 4545 meter, the Weisshorn with 4507 meter and the Matterhorn with 4477 meter. The most favoured areas for vacation in Switzerland are the Engadin, Bernese Oberland, the area around Vierwaltstätter See, Wallis and Tessin. The Bernese Oberland with the Jungfrau-area is one of the most beautiful recreation areas in Switzerland. Not only for its skiing. Please enjoy all these many beautiful impressions that you can discover on a hike throughout the Swiss glacier world.

Climate in Switzerland

Because of the mountains there are a variety of micro climates in Switzerland. The major part of the country has a Central European climate with daily temperatures around 18 till 28°C during summer and 7°C at winter. The coldest region is Jura, in particular the Brévine-valley. In contrast the Tessin has a hot and mediterranean climate in the south.

The continental climate in the Alps shows its biggest extremes between summer and winter. During the summer period it very often is sunny but during that period the most rainfalls are achieved. A character of the weather is the Föhn, a hot, dry, very often uncomfortable sensing wind that blows down through the valleys. This wind (Föhn) can occur at any time of the year mainly during spring and fall.

The best tourist season: At any time of the year you can meet many different climate conditions in Switzerland. You can visit and discover Switzerland throughout the year. The touristic activities are dependant of the kind of activities that are planned (for example swimming, skiing).

The summer period lasts from June till September and offers the best conditions for activities outside the country (exceptional the winter sport). Many adventure sport activities like canyoning only are available during that period. The high season is in July and August, during that period the prices are high, the accommodations very often are booked out and sight seeings are over crowded. During the side seasons in April, May, and October there are less tourists and you'll find lower accommodation prices.

Spring is a very good season to discover Switzerland with blooming landscapes except the feasts at Easter. In Tessin the wild flowers already are blooming starting from March. Hikers who want to explore the higher regions should be prepared and equipped against snow conditions till June (in some areas during the whole year snow constantly is present).

The winter season in the alpine resorts begins in the middle of December reaches its peak around Christmas time and ends with the snow melts (mainly mid April). Between the summer and winter season nearly all skiing resorts are closed (exceptionally there where skiing is available on the glaciers throughout the year).

Between the mid of August and the end of October a rather more constant weather is available, this is a good period for hiking.
